The BBC has made a change to iPlayer that hasn’t gone down well with all their viewers.

The broadcaster plans to get rid of iPlayer downloads for PCs and Macs, which will result in viewers no longer being able to watch content on the go without an internet connection on these devices.

Existing users can continue to enjoy it, but new users are unable to download it.

Viewers will still be able to download content through the app, which is available on mobile phones and tablets.

One viewer Steven Gerrard wrote on X, formerly Twitter: ‘”We have started the process of closing the Desktop Downloads App.

‘Downloading programmes from a computer or laptop will no longer be available from Monday 11 March.” Why?? This is terrible news. I watch almost all my BBC shows on my MacBook :(‘

He added: ‘It’s really inconvenient as I often watch stuff when there’s no wifi.’

After the decision was reported by the Cordbusters another viewer, Arthur Booty, was concerned about the quality of shows on smaller screens.

‘I DO NOT want to peer at a tiny mobile screen with poor sound quality to watch a film/drama/wildlife program, etc, originally produced in HD,’ they expressed.

Andrew Joynson added: ‘This is a discriminatory move by the BBC. Why are tablet and phone users offered a superior service? I don’t have an iPad and I don’t want to watch on my phone so now I’m going to be one of 10’s of thousands of people who’ll stop downloading content to watch at my convenience.’
