Petr Cech has aimed a dig at Todd Boehly for Chelsea’s struggles this season, suggesting he has made too many changes to the squad and his decision to spend huge transfer fees on players has ramped up pressure.
Chelsea co-owner Boehly took over from Roman Abramovich in May 2022 and has completely rebuilt the club both on and off the pitch, making a series of changes behind the scenes while also revamping the squad with younger stars.
The west Londoners have spent over £1 billion on players in the Boehly era, which included a £106.8m deal for Enzo Fernandez and £115m deal for Moises Caicedo.
The Blues are still struggling this term after an abysmal 12th-placed finish last season, even after bringing in Mauricio Pochettino as head coach this summer.
It is thought that several Chelsea stars regret signing such long contracts, with the club handing out deals as long as eight-and-half-years since Boehly arrived.
Former Chelsea goalkeeper Cech, who worked as a Technical and Performance Advisor at Stamford Bridge before Boehly arrived, has shared his thoughts on the club’s struggles.
‘The takeover itself is a big change,’ Cech told Sky Sports. ‘You have a new owner with a new vision, a new style, a new way they want the club to be run.Legendary goalkeeper Petr Cech made 494 Chelsea appearances (Picture: Getty)
‘That takes some adaptation, it includes the players and everybody working for the club. These things take time. The team was built a certain way but since I’ve left, there was a complete remake of the squad and it’s challenging for everybody when you have a lot of changes.
‘Some of the players probably came in with huge expectations, with a lot of money being spent of them, which creates even more pressure. When the results aren’t there, this squad is really young and I think they sometimes find it hard to live up to those expectations.
‘Looking at the games over the last month, you don’t see the spine or the core of the team.

‘The goalkeeper has been changing, the defence has been changing, the midfield and attacking players are changing too.
‘That shows there is a lot of potential, but the coaches haven’t found the right formula yet to find the core that would stabilise and than you fill in the other players.’
Meanwhile, Cech feels that Chelsea are a long way off from being able to compete for the Premier League title.

“If you speak about a league title, this season is not going they way they wished for,’ Cech added.
‘If they can have a really good strong end of the season and build up for the next season, maybe that’s the season where Chelsea can climb up the table, challenging for top four.
‘The season after, is the first realistic year for Chelsea to challenge for the title.’
