A heartbroken young mum is demanding answers after being sent home from hospital days before giving birth to a stillborn baby.

Madison Goodwin, 18, was due to have an emergency C-section, but was incorrectly sent home after a name mix-up at the hospital.

The teenager was a patient a Southend Hospital Essex, where she was told she would have an emergency operation after a scan on January 11 of this year.

She was later told that she had been confused with another patient with the same name and due date, and a new scan showed her baby was kicking.

Madison was discharged, and doctors told her she would be called back for monitoring and potentially an induction.

Returning to the same hospital on January 13, Madison was tragically told her baby had no heartbeat. She then was induced and had to give birth to her stillborn daughter.

Madison said: ‘The bereavement midwives that have supported me through my loss have been amazing.

‘But since I left the hospital on the 17th, I haven’t had any more direct contact with the hospital.

‘The idea of other people going through this horrible thing is just as awful – it happens so often and it just gets brushed over.

‘This has caused pain and lifelong trauma and I want people to know about it if it stops it happening again’.

In an inspection last year, Southend University Hospital was rated as ‘requires improvement’.

Madison’s mother, Dawn, has said she believes that if she had had the C-section on her visit on the 11th, her granddaughter would still be alive.

‘I think there needs to be a thorough investigation into Southend Hospital.

Dawn added: ‘We want certain procedures to protect mother and baby like more scans as the pregnancy progresses and two or more consultants who decide on a treatment plan.’

After the tragic stillbirth, Madison and her partner Matteo spent two days at Southhend Hospital with their daughters’ body, before taking her to Great Ormond Street Hospital for a post-mortem.

The young family are now preparing for a funeral.

Diane Sarkar, Chief Nursing and Quality Officer for Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘Our condolences go out to the family at this difficult time.

‘We would like to reassure them that we have already begun a full investigation and that all stillbirths are automatically reviewed in line with national guidance.

‘We are in close contact with the family and are keeping them informed on the progress of the investigation.’
