Formula One chiefs have confirmed the venues for the six Sprint weekends on the 2024 calendar.
After holding sprint races in 2023, Austria, the USA, Brazil and Qatar will once again do so next year.
Joining them will be China and Miami, taking the place of Azerbaijan and Belgium, while the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, which held the very first sprint race in 2021, has once again been snubbed.
The decision to host a sprint in Miami has been met with a lukewarm reaction, given the general dislike towards the circuit and the Florida venue as a whole.
China is set to make it’s return to the sport for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, and it will be intriguing to see how this generation of F1 cars perform on the Shanghai International Circuit.
‘I am delighted to announce six exciting venues for next season’s F1 Sprint events, including two new hosts China and Miami, both of which will be fantastic additions and provide great racing for all our fans at the race and watching at home,’ F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
‘Since its creation in 2021, the Sprint has been consistent in delivering increased audiences on TV, more on track entertainment for the fans at events and increased fan engagement on social and digital platforms, and we are looking forward to the exciting events next year.’
2024 F1 Sprint weekends:
China, Shanghai International Circuit – 19th-21st April
Miami, Miami International Autodrome – 3rd-5th May
Austria, Red Bull Ring – 28th-30th June
USA, Circuit of the Americas – 18th-20th October
Brazil, Interlagos – 1st-3rd November
Qatar, Lusail International Circuit – 29th November-1st December
The format for the Sprint weekends is likely to change again in 2024 after the changes for last season prompted confusion and criticism.
Qualifying for the sprint will take place on Friday after one practice session, with the sprint race held on Saturday before qualifying for the main grand prix.
But discussions between F1 chiefs and team bosses are ongoing over other tweaks that could be made to the Sprint which has had a mixed reception since it’s introduction in 2021.The last Chinese GP was held in 2019 (Photo: Getty)
It is said that partial or fully reversed could indeed be used, something that while a little divisive would no doubt provide a brilliant spectacle.
Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz has previously shared his enthusiasm for reverse grids, saying back in September: ‘Personally I would continue with the sprint races, I would do them with an inverted starting grid.
‘The group would become more compact and those who are usually in the rear would give everything to win a few points.

‘Think of [Max] Verstappen starting from the last square. In addition, a different show would be offered to the audience, compared to now that the sprint is a preview of Sunday’s race.’
The 2024 F1 season gets under way on 2nd March in Bahrain.
