Cher missed out on ‘a lot of money’ after failing to secure a writing credit on Believe.

As one of the iconic chart-topper’s most famous songs, the 77-year-old singer admitted one of her biggest regrets was being too ‘stupid’ to ask for her lyrical contribution to the 1998 single to be recognised.

It was officially credited to Brian Higgins, Stuart McLennen, Paul Barry, Steven Torch, Matthew Gray and Timothy Powell, and went on to sell more than 11million copies around the world.

Believe also topped the charts in over 23 countries and was the biggest-selling single of the year in the UK, as well as remaining the highest-selling single by a solo female artist to date.

Speaking on BBC Radio 2’s Tracks Of My Years about the chaotic creation of Believe, she told host Vernon Kay: ‘You can’t even imagine – about 30 people wrote on it. And I wrote it and was so stupid – I didn’t even ask to get a writer’s credit!

‘I wrote, ‘I’ve had time to think it through, and maybe I’m too good for you”.’

The star revealed that her thought process around that line was that ‘a chick can be upset for one verse but not two, not on one of my songs’.

Hear, hear Cher!

With Vernon pointing out just how many copies it sold, the star agreed: ‘I could have gotten a lot of money.’

The If I Could Turn Back Time hitmaker also recalled how tense recording the song was, resulting in her walking out of the studio when her vocals were criticised.

She laughed: ‘The verse was so bad. I couldn’t make it good.

‘I got into a big fight with Mark [Taylor, producer], and Mark kept saying, “You’ve got to sing it better.” And finally I went, “If you want it sung better, get somebody else” and I walked out.’

However, the next morning she suggested using a ‘vocoder’ but that was shot down too, with producers insisting that she must sing live.

But the track was eventually altered thanks to a pitch machine and Cher loves how unrecognisable her voice is in parts of the song.

‘I couldn’t believe how fabulous it was, and my favourite thing was that you didn’t know it was my voice at the beginning,’ she shared.

The veteran singer is currently promoting her first ever festive album, which is titled Christmas, but insisted she just wanted to make people ‘feel happy’, rather than place particular emphasis on the holiday season.

‘I don’t want people to think of me and Christmas as one with this album. What I wanted to do was make an album that would make people feel happy.

‘I wanted it to be joyous. I just wanted to pick songs that even if it doesn’t go together, it makes you feel better.’

She also dismissed speculation that she is trying to take the festive crown away from All I Want For Christmas is You hitmaker Mariah Carey, with that song featuring on her own holiday season playlist.

‘She can do things with her voice… It’s unbelievable,’ Cher said of ‘great vocalist’ Mariah.

‘When you hear what she can do with her voice, it always amazes me. It’s a thrill to hear someone who’s able to sing so well.’

Christmas is available to buy, stream and download now.
