In a risky move that paid off, an ex-girlfriend flew from Australia to England to surprise her ex-boyfriend – and now, they’re back together.

Tamika Cheney, 21, dumped her partner of three and a half years, Sam Aitken, when he moved from the Sunshine Coast to Brighton in order to pursue his dream of becoming a musician.

They initially stayed in touch, but Tamika says jealousy got the better of them both and she decided cut contact ‘before things got toxic’.

But four months later, in the ultimate romantic gesture, she spent £1,572 ($3,000 AUD) on her 24-hour flight in order to reunite with Sam.

Sam had no idea that his ex was about to turn up on his doorstep, but he was clearly thrilled – Tamika filmed the sweet moment she was reunited with her ‘first love’ in Brighton, sharing how it ‘didn’t feel real’.

In the clip, Sam takes a moment to process things, before picking her up and kissing her.

Recalling the moment, Tamika said: ‘It felt like a movie. It didn’t feel real to me.

‘I was very nervous and I think I started shaking my hands because the anticipation was killing me.

‘He opened the door and he was obviously very shocked. He walked away because he didn’t know how to react.

‘I wasn’t expecting the kiss. You see me hesitate and pull back because I didn’t know we would get back together.

‘For the whole afternoon, he couldn’t stop touching me. He thought it wasn’t real and thought he was in a fever dream.’

Sam and Tamika had originally met at school 12 years ago, and had been dating for three and a half years.

Despite splitting, Tamika stayed close with Sam’s mum – and the pair hatched a plan.

‘I still had a very good relationship with his family so I visited his mum and dad for dinner. His mum told me that he was very much still in love with me and didn’t see himself moving on,’ says Tamika.

‘Unbeknownst to me, she actually had booked me a flight for November because he was so sad and she wanted me to visit.

‘She said they would send me over and it doesn’t have to be romantic, but obviously he was my first love – it was always going to be a little bit romantic.’

She went on to confess that she had been concerned she’d arrive at Sam’s house to find he was with another girl, but thankfully that wasn’t the case.

‘I had a plan if he didn’t want me there or felt weird about it I was just going to travel Europe for the month I was there,’ she says.

And if she decided she did like it in Brighton, she’d move over to continue her relationship with Sam. However, her first impression of the city wasn’t exactly the best.

‘Brighton was very different to the Sunshine Coast,’ she stated.

‘I tried to get up and go walking in the morning but in Australia, if you get up and go to the beach for a swim it’s packed and everyone says hello and it’s a very friendly vibe.

‘I went for a walk in Brighton and there’s not many people out, it’s a little bit scary… I thought this might not work.

‘I had just spent a lot of money for something I’m considering isn’t going to work.’

But two weeks later Sam booked them a holiday to Mallorca, which ultimately convinced Tamika to stay in Europe.

‘We got back together in Spain. We decided to give it another crack. It was very much a mutual decision.’

She recently shared the video of their reunion on TikTok and her clip quickly went viral, garnering over 1.7million views and more than 139,000 likes.

Many viewers were inspired by her romantic gesture, but there were some who branded it ‘toxic’.

Tamika captioned her post: ‘A real-life movie moment! Take risks for the plot ladies #longdistancerelationship’.

One TikTok user commented: ‘Girl don’t you dare I’m about to buy a plane ticket.’ To which Tamika replied: ‘I’m the devil on your shoulder telling you yes do it [devil emoji].’

Another person said: ‘This is so toxic. I LOVE IT.’

A different user added: ‘My ex would get a restraining order on me if I did this.’
