Winter in the UK and houseplants… they are not the best of friends.
Even plants that require minimal care can suffer in the colder months, be it through root rot from overwatering, lack of sunlight, or confusing temperatures and dry air from radiators.
On that note, there is one simple thing to keep in mind to give your plants the best chance of survival.
Chris Bonnett from GardeningExpress.co.uk warned: ‘While heating keeps us warm and cosy, it can cause harm to our precious houseplants.
‘The dry, heated air can parch your plants, leaving them stressed and vulnerable.
‘This doesn’t mean that you should avoid using heating, it’s just important to be more vigilant with plant care and create a comfortable environment for houseplants to thrive during winter.’
He said you need to find spots in the home where plants are kept ‘away from heat sources, yet maintain a safe distance from windows to shield them from chilly drafts.’
A humidifier can help, or bringing the plants into the bathroom while having a hot bath or a shower.
These are Chris’ tips for giving your plants the best chance over the winter.
Positioning your plants together creates a microenvironment with higher humidity.
The plants experience increased moisture through transpiration.
A humidifier will increase indoor humidity levels, battling against dry air from radiators.
Or place water trays near plants, and take them into the bathroom with you while you shower.
Another option is to gently mist plants regularly to boost the humidity around them. But don’t go overboard – excessive moisture can cause fungal issues.
Adjust your watering
Check soil moisture regularly, and water when the top inch is dry.
Indoor heating can dry out plants and soil quicker than normal.
Protect from drafts
Keep plants away from cold drafts from windows or doors, as this will harm your plant’s health.
