World No.1 Scottie Scheffler was seen holding back the tears after he and Brooks Koepka were subjected to a record Ryder Cup foursomes defeat on another painful morning for the American team.
Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg etched their names in Ryder Cup history with the largest margin of victory for an 18-hole match, 9&7.
They needed only 11 holes over 2 hours and 20 minutes to beat Scheffler and five-time major champion Brooks Koepka.
The previous record for foursomes was 7 and 6, most recently when Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley beat Luke Donald and Lee Westwood at Medinah in 2012. The record for a fourballs match is 7 and 5, while the singles record is 8 and 7.
The well fancied American now face an almost impossible task to retain the trophy they won so convincingly at Whistling Straights just two years ago but the suggestion that the competition doesn’t mean as much to their players was blown out of the water judging by Scheffler’s post match reaction.Brooks Koepka was equally out of sorts as America’s all-star foursomes pair slid to a record defeat (Picture: Getty)
With his head in his hands sat next to his wife, the 27-year-old appeared inconsolable as he digested the significance of another seismic blow to America’s hopes.
‘We were meeting two strong guys – number one in the world and five-time major champion,’ said Hovland, whose mood could not have been in starker contrast to Scheffler.
‘We tried to not give them anything. We played really solid and obviously didn’t meet a sharp Scottie and Brooks but we played some really nice golf today
On his thriving partnerhsip with fellow Scandinavian Aberg, he added: ‘So far so good. I don’t think we could have done better. It’s nice to speak our own language, we understand each other.
‘Same humour, same culture. He doesn’t miss a shot. It’s easy when I’m playing well and he’s playing well. We’re just feeding off of each other.’
