Erik ten Hag hailed the contributions of Sofyan Amrabat, Harry Maguire and Mason Mount after they all started Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
Amrabat was making his first start for the Red Devils, while Maguire was in the starting XI for the first time this season and Mount returned from injury against the Eagles.
All went very well for Ten Hag as Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial scored the goals in a comfortable victory.
Amrabat was deployed at left-back, but with a roving role that allowed him to wander into his preferred midfield and Ten Hag was impressed with the Moroccan on his full debut.
‘That’s why we play him there, I know he’s capable,’ said the Dutchman of Amrabat at full-back. ‘He’s a player, where the team needs him, he plays there.
‘He gives contribution to the team, that is quality, but also the energy and the dynamic he brings.’
Mount was removed at half-time, replaced by Victor Lindelof, which raised concerns of a recurrence of the injury that has kept him out for the last month.
However, Ten Hag confirmed that his substitution at the break was pre-planned and part of his recovery schedule.
‘Definitely, [it was planned] before,’ said Ten Hag. ‘He’s returning from an injury and we have to build this up. We go too quickly and we get a drop, we want to avoid that. I think his performance was very good.’
The Red Devils boss had little to say on Maguire’s performance, which was good, as he partnered Raphael Varane at centre-back.
‘He was very solid, just as you can expect from Harry Maguire,’ said Ten Hag.Amrabat looked good on his full Manchester United debut (Picture: Getty Images)
Otherwise, it was a much-changed United team, featuring a string of youngsters, with Ten Hag saying they all deserved a run-out in the first team.
‘I think we had many young players on the pitch, and you see they are progressing,’ he said. ‘With me you don’t get the opportunity, you have to deserve it. Those young players who come on, from Hannibal, to [Facundo] Pellistri, to Garnacho, to Dan Gore, they all deserve it, to get playing time.
‘They have to show it every day in training, with our coaches. Then you get an opportunity and then you have to take it.’
