Matt Hancock has revealed he broke a rib while filming Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins – but kept it secret.

The disgraced former health secretary, 44, has pivoted toward reality TV while continuing as MP for West Suffolk, and suffered more than a few cuts and bruises on his latest showbiz stint.

Asked whether he had contemplated quitting the gruelling Channel 4 show, which sees celebrities compete in military challenges, Hancock responded: ‘Having my rib broken was probably the closest I got but I was determined to keep going so I just kept my mouth shut so I wasn’t medically discharged.’

Hancock put his perseverance down to ‘resilience’, adding: ‘It’s my resilience and determination to keep going that pushed me forward. I’m also an optimist and that helps you to keep moving forward when it might be easier to give up.’

The politician has been put through his paces on Celebrity SAS, challenged to a series of interrogations and brutal tasks in the Vietnamese jungle, alongside the likes of Gareth Gates, Montana Brown, Melinda Messenger and Michelle Heaton.

A trailer has teased what to expect from Hancock’s appearance – and it looks like he’s not in for an easy ride, with clips revealing he will be reduced to ‘tears’ during an interrogation and punched to the ground by contestant Jermaine Pennant.

Chief instructor Billy Billingham has also assured Hancock gets ‘absolutely destroyed’ during the seven-part series.

‘We treat everybody the same and we really went at him,’ said Billingham.

He continued to The Sun: ‘In the interrogation bit, he gets destroyed, absolutely destroyed.’

Hancock’s time on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins comes a year after he headed to the Australian jungle for I’m A Celebrity, a move that slammed by politicians and stars, including Jodie Comer.

Nonetheless, Hancock eventually landed in third place, behind Owen Warner and Queen of the Jungle Jill Scott, earning himself a massive £320,000 fee, donating a slim £10,000 to charity.

Hancock’s decision to continue down the reality TV route, especially while being responsible for a constituency, has continued to be criticised, including recently by Alison Hammond.
