Nasser Hussain has backed England to beat Australia in a close Ashes series as Ben Stokes’ side set up a routine win over Ireland at Lord’s.
England are tuning up for the five-match Ashes series – which starts on June 16 – by playing Ireland in a four-day Test at the Home of Cricket.
Ireland gave England a scare in this fixture four years ago – bowling the hosts out for 85 on the first morning before Jack Leech’s second-innings heroics as nightwatchman.
But England have dominated this match from the outset, with Stuart Broad’s 20th Test five-wicket haul limiting Ireland to 172 on day one.
Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope then both hit quick centuries as England scored more than 500 and built a mammoth lead of 330 by tea on day two.
An 11th win in 13 matches under Stokes and Brendon McCullum awaits and Hussain believes England will enjoy more success during the Ashes and win the series 3-2.
While England are looking to reclaim the urn following a heavy 4-0 defeat in Australia last time out, the Baggy Greens are bidding to win a Test series on these shores for the first time since 2001.

‘This is a very good Australian side. Everyone will focus in on ‘Bazball’ – and can England bash the likes of [Mitchell] Starc, [Pat] Cummins, [Nathan] Lyon and co?
‘Having said that, for me the issue is can Australia’s batting line-up get a par score to give their top-drawer bowling line-up a chance?

‘Australia’s batting line-up, in England – with the exception of [Steve] Smith and [Marnus] Labuschagne – haven’t clicked.’
On the excitement around the upcoming men’s Ashes series, ex-England captain Hussain added: ‘There is an added bit of excitement.
‘I reckon, whatever happens, we’d be turning up to Edgbaston on day one – given the history of that place, the crowd and the atmosphere – hugely excited, but I think there’s even more this time.

‘Can they carry on this no fear cricket in an environment where everyone in this country cares deeply about the result?’
