The Premier League side are currently in talks with Sporting over a move for the 22-year-old midfielder with Mauricio Pochettino, confirmed as new Chelsea manager on Monday, giving the move the green light.

Both Chelsea and PSG are willing to pay Ugarte’s £52milliion release clause with Sporting admitting they are fighting a losing battle to hold onto one of their prized assets.

Record report the Uruguay international is favouring a move to the Premier League with Chelsea offered £50m plus £4m in add-ons and the services of 20-year-old striker Fofana on loan.

Sporting however have rejected that proposal with talks continuing.

Chelsea signed Fofana from Norwegian sign Molde during the January transfer window, making four appearances during the second half of the 2022-23 season.

The Ivorian was also offered to Benfica during the January transfer window shortly after his arrival at the club as part of Chelsea’s efforts to sign Enzo Fernandez.

Speaking about the player’s future last week, Sporting boss Ruben Anorim said: ‘I cannot comment on this issue, because it is beyond me. Now, we know that it is difficult to keep players like Ugarte.

‘Not just one club is interested, but several. Our objective is to sell, knowing that we missed the Champions League and it makes everything more difficult. I know what I want for the team and I have already conveyed that to the management.’

A summer of upheaval is expected at Stamford Bridge with heavy focus on trimming the bloated squad with a new striker and goalkeeper also targeted.
