AN ASDA shopper was gobsmacked to discover his supermarket find was going to set him back a whopping £617 – but it was all down to a simple error.

After finding croissant reduced to 60p, the bargain hunter picked them up for his breakfast.

A packet of two Asda Extra Special almond croissants were marked as just 60p, instead of the original £1.70.

But when the savvy shopper headed to the checkout, he noticed an error on his receipt, the Mirror reported.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was lucky he double checked his receipt – or it could have been a costly mistake.

He added: “The member of staff and myself both saw the funny side of it though. Imagine if I hadn’t noticed, they’d have had to have been the best croissants of my life.”

Fortunately, everything worked out in the end.

An Asda spokesperson said the incorrect price was a “complete anomaly”, caused by a smudged barcode.

They added: “We know our croissants are good, but we agree £617 might be pushing it!

“This looks to have been a one-off caused by a smudged or damaged barcode that has scanned incorrectly and we’ve checked our other yellow sticker products at this store and not found any other issues.

“Thankfully this was spotted and rectified by our colleague immediately, and we hope this customer enjoyed their croissants knowing he only paid 60p for them in the end.”

There’s plenty of other bargain finds around at the moment, too.

Sainsbury’s customers have been rushing out to buy outdoor essentials selling for just £1 instead of £18.

One savvy shopper took to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group yesterday sharing a photo of the TU women’s wellies.

Just last week, a B&M customer found a three-piece glass canister set selling for 10p instead of £9.99 – a whopping 99% discount.

Meanwhile, earlier this month Atkinsons was selling an air fryer for £10 down from £120.
