The Japan international picked up a serious knee problem in the Europa League exit to Sporting Lisbon that required surgery this week.

It is a blow for the Gunners, who are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League with 10 games left as they look to lift their first top-flight title since 2004.

The north London club hoping to have Tomiyasu back in time for pre-season in the summer ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.

The 24-year-old took to Instagram on Wednesday and posted: ‘Heads up and stay positive.

‘I believe that this is the opportunity to be a better person and player.

‘Thank you for your warm message(s) and support. See you soon!!!’

Although Tomiyasu has mainly been used as a back-up to Ben White at right-back this season, his absence increases the strain on a back-line that is also without William Saliba for the next few weeks.

The Frenchman also picked up an injury in the defeat to Sporting and missed Sunday’s 4-1 win over Crystal Palace, with Rob Holding stepping in.
