Brace yourselves! A nine-hour director’s cut of Avatar 3 is reportedly going to be split into a limited Disney Plus series.

The first two instalments of the critically acclaimed sci-fi are both considerably long, but according to reports, devoted fans might need to carve out some time for this potential series.

During the latest episode of The Hot Mic podcast, film critic Jeff Sneider shared that director James Cameron had a nine-hour cut of the flick ready back in December 2022.

‘Months ago, I put out a rumour about James Cameron having a nine-hour cut of Avatar 3 that he wanted to finish the visual effects form,’ he said.

‘A lot of people were like, “Why would the studio pay for that? Why would he insist on doing visual effects if then he’s gonna cut the movie?”’

He continued: ‘The idea is that Cameron would do all the visual effects for his nine-hour cut of Avatar 3 and then release it on Disney+ as a limited series after the theatrical cut is released.’

At the beginning of the year the Titanic director, 68, explained that Avatar 3 will look at another element, with the introduction of the Ash People ‘representing fire.

The filmmaker revealed that the as-yet untitled movie, which is in post-production and scheduled for a December 2024 release, will show ‘different cultures from those I have already shown’ and that he plans ‘to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides’.

He also publicly stated that he would end the whole franchise early, after the already-filmed third instalment, if it became apparent that audiences no longer ‘give a s**t’.

Luckily, the film sailed past the $1,000,000,000 (£829,660,000) milestone at the global box office in late December, less than two weeks after its release.

It became the fastest movie to reach the coveted goal in 2022 – Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion also hit the mark.

The original film, released over 13 years ago at the end of 2009, remains the most lucrative film in history, with a worldwide gross of over $2.9bn (£2.4bn).
