At recent press events for Ashton, 45, and 46-year-old Reese’s new Netflix romcom Your Place Or Mine, the world couldn’t help but notice the actors looked pretty shifty together, as the Dude, Where’s My Car star stood with his hands firmly in his pockets and the Legally Blonde legend loitered nearby.
After being called out for their unusual behavior on social media, with some comparing snaps to ‘school photos’, the pair put on a show of solidarity and appeared to be best buddies in the next batch of red carpet appearences.
But here’s what really happened, according to the pair.
Reese, who has been married to actor and producer Jim Toth since 2011, tried to clear up confusion when she spoke on Today with Hoda & Jenna.
The mum-of-three revealed how Ashton’s wife and fellow acting royalty Mila Kunis, 39, who is a great pal of the Morning Show star, called them out for being awkward herself.

‘She even emailed us last night,’ the feminist producer said on February 6. ‘She goes, “You guys look so awkward on the red carpet together”.’
And now Ashton has corroborated her story, as he explained on Chicks in the Office podcast how Mila, with who he shares two children, told them to tone down the awkwardness.
‘My wife called me, she texted Reese and I together and she said, “Guys, you gotta act like you like each other”, and I’m like, what’s going on?’ joked Ashton.
Exasperated, he continued: ‘Here’s the thing. If I put my arm around her and was all friendly with her, I’d be having an affair with her. Like the rumour would be that I’m having an affair with her.’
‘If I stand next to her and put my hands in my pockets, there’s no chance that could be the rumour.’
But it appears Ashton has shot himself in the foot, and realised it too, when he asked, flabbergasted: ‘So now the rumour is we don’t like each other?
‘Reese and I are really good friends. We’re really close. I don’t have to defend that.’
But the pair weren’t so close until Your Place Or Mine cast them as a duo with 20 years of friendship under their belts.
‘We had to learn to be friends, because we were supposed to have been friends for 20 years,’ explained Reese. ‘So we started talking every day and sending little Facetime videos.’
‘I was like, “These are my dogs. These are my kids.” My kids would tease him about his football team.’

We had so much fun, and every time he’d wear a funny outfit, I’d text Mila. I’d be like, “What is he wearing?!”
‘It was just fun to get to know her significant other because I’ve known her for so long.’
Some fans agreed with Ashton and said, ‘He’s right. It’s a no win’, and, ‘He literally said it. People will say they look awkward and then if he was all friendly, they’re having an affair. Just let them be.’
Others aren’t so convinced, though, as one took to social media and wrote: ‘Usually people only act awkward if they are having an affair and they don’t want anyone to suspect it.’

We can only hope the awkwardness was born from their shared knowledge of how steamy the romantic comedy is going to be, but we won’t find out until February 10 when it drops on Netflix, so time will tell.
