Hundreds of thousands more people could be living in dangerously damp and mouldy homes like that of tragic two-year-old Awaab Ishak, housing secretary Michael Gove has said.

The minister travelled to Rochdale where Awaab died after his lungs were contaminated with mould in his flat.

He met landlord Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) and blocked £1million in funding, saying its behaviour was unforgivable. ‘There are people not just on that estate but elsewhere in the borough who are living in homes that are not really fit for human habitation,’ he told Sky News.

Chief executive Gareth Swarbrick was forced out this week after a coroner heard RBH repeatedly failed to address concerns raised by Awaab’s parents.

The couple have called for the rest of RBH’s board to quit and a law to improve how complaints are handled.

Mr Gove vowed he would withhold funding from any housing association failing its tenants.

‘I fear it’s the case that there are at least tens of thousands of properties that are not in the state that they should be,’ he told BBC Breakfast.

The Ishaks’ lawyer Christian Weaver said Mr Gove had promised to return to Rochdale in six months and keep them updated on progress. ‘The family are hopeful and closely watching to see that the meaningful changes promised come about,’ he added.
